The percolation test is used to determine the absorption rate of the soil of rainwater from rooftops and paved areas, e.g. terrraces. By using a small pilot hole with gravel layer in the bottom, it is possible to determine the absorption rate. In general, sandy soil will absorb more water than soil with a high concentration of clay or where the water table is close to the surface.
The results of a percolation test are required to properly design a septic system. The septic system is designed for the local conditions like single-family houses, apartment houses, streets and squares.
